International News: The whole world was eyeing the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday before the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference. This was the moment that was waited for for the last seven years—when the top leaders of India and China sat face-to-face and created a new definition of their relationships.
Inaugurating the talks, Prime Minister Modi clearly said that India is committed to pursuing its relations with China on the basis of mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity. Referring to the restoration of peace on the border and the return of stability after the military withdrawal process, he said that now both countries will have to take concrete steps towards cooperation.
Modi gave the example of the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and the restoration of direct flights between India and China, saying that the impact of this partnership is not only limited to both countries, but is directly related to the lives of about 2.8 billion people.
Emphasizing the importance of relationships in his speech, President Xi Jinping said that India and China are not only Asia but are also the oldest and largest civilizations in the whole world. He said that both countries are the voice of the Global South and can set an example of cooperation by becoming good neighbors.
In a symbolic way, Jinping said, "If the dragon and elephant dance together, the whole world will get a message of peace and stability."
Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Jinping on the success of SCO, headed by China, and thanked him for the meeting. On this, Jinping also welcomed Modi and said, "Prime Minister, it is pleasant to meet you again. Last year, our meeting in Kazan gave a new direction to relationships. This time you're welcome to China; it's a pleasure for me."
Diplomats believe that this meeting is not just a formality but a major signal in the direction of a thaw in relationships, the direct interaction between the two leaders after seven years. Due to border disputes and tension, there is a possibility of filling new energy in the relationship now.
If India and China go ahead on the path of cooperation and partnership, it will have an impact not only on both countries but also on the geopolitics and economy of Asia and the whole world.
